Graying or white hair is largely brought on by melanin-producing cells called melanocytes generating less of the pigment melanin. These cells are located in the hair follicles, which are the roots of the hair. The onset of greying is influenced by a number of factors, including inheritance and inherited traits, in addition to age (the average age of greying is often in the late 25s to early 35s depending on race).
